Properties of active ingredients
Tomato titrated in 20% lycopene
Lycopene has been the subject of numerous studies in various fields (skin beauty, cardiovascular health, vision, etc.), including the field of men’s health that interests us here.
Lycopene is a tetraterpene of the carotenoid family. It is widely used in supplements as it is a natural plant-based ingredient that has many health benefits and does not cause discomfort or side effects. In addition, the use of lycopene in the form of tablets or capsules leads to an increase in lycopene in the blood, which is just as interesting as the consumption of lycopene in a food matrix (e.g. in tomatoes). Because of these facts, numerous clinical studies have been conducted by Lycored* regarding men’s health.
Lycopene is commonly known as a powerful antioxidant, but also for its anti-inflammatory activity. Indeed, its antioxidant power is due to the inhibitory action of 8-oxo-dG deoxyribonucleoside (a biochemical marker of oxidative stress) and allows to influence cell proliferation as well as tissue remodeling in the context of prostate hypertrophy.
Also, clinical studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory activity of lycopene is illustrated by its action on the level of CPR (C reactive protein / reactivity, characteristic of the presence of inflammation). In addition, the production of TNF-α (pro-inflammatory cytokine), which naturally increases with age, significantly decreases in men taking lycopene supplements (-34%).
Clinically the effects were also demonstrated on PSA levels (-18% for the additive group versus -14% for the control group). Prostate-specific antigen is an antibody that is used to detect and treat prostate cancer.
Prostate-specific antigen is a marker of prostate health. This protein is naturally produced by the prostate gland, and while its levels are prone to increase with age, high PSA levels are usually synonymous with discomfort in the intimate area/prostate diseases (benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, etc.). Therefore, the serum concentration of lycopene is inversely proportional to the PSA level in the blood (and this phenomenon is observed with 8 mg daily supplementation).
Lycopene has also been shown to inhibit 5-α-reductase (an enzyme that blocks the action of testosterone that promotes prostate swelling and urinary symptoms) and interleukin-6 (a pro-inflammatory cytokine that promotes the progression of prostate disease) in rats. Therefore, 5-α-reductase inhibitors alter the hormonal system of the prostate by blocking the activity of this enzyme, the breakdown of testosterone into dihydrotesterone (DHT) is limited.
Therefore, lycopene acts on the metabolism of androgenic hormones. As a result, there is a decrease in the levels of DHT in the prostate, which is an important factor in the emergence and development of BPH. 5-α-reductase inhibitors help limit prostate adenoma.
At the clinical level, the action of the extract on prostate enlargement is indeed observed. While in the placebo group, the participants’ prostate volume progression continued through the 6 months of the study. In the lycopene group, this enlargement was delayed (not stopped).
Studies have also shown an effect of lycopene on the reduction of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor, type 1) in the bloodstream. This protein is produced in response to growth hormone (GH) stimulation and appears to be associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer.
In addition, a logical increase in IGF-BP-3 (IGF-binding protein-3) was observed, as it is the binding protein, the transporter of IGF-1. The low circulating level of IGF-BP-3 also appears to have a positive correlation with the risk of developing prostate cancer.
Finally, since prostate-related discomfort was significantly improved (as reflected by the International Prostate Symptom Assessment Questionnaire), we can also highlight the overall increase in quality of life in men using lycopene supplements (better sleep, lower degree of anxiety, as comfort in the intimate area is calmed).
Note: Lycopene is also well known and documented for its role in reducing cardiovascular risk.
ACTION OF LYCOPENE
AFRICAN CHERRY (PRUNUS AFRICANA)
African cherry is a member of the Rosaceae family. It is a large tree, up to 30 m high, which is found in the tropical forests of the mountains of central and eastern Africa. Its bark is used in dietary supplements. It contains phytosterols, triterpenic acid, betulinic acid (known for its diuretic and detoxifying action) and tannins.
It has traditionally been used in Africa for urination problems. In the west, it is prescribed for benign prostatic hyperplasia and associated diseases. Phytosterol-betasitosterol has an effect on the level of prostaglandins (which tend to increase in prostate problems), but also on androgens in general. Just like lycopene, African cherry (Prunus africana) also plays a role in 5-α-reductase (an enzyme that blocks the action of testosterone) and has anti-inflammatory activity.
ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS
Asparagus (Asparagus racemosus), also called Shatavari, belongs to the Asparagous family. It is a climbing plant, between 1 and 2 meters high, with stems that can reach up to 4 meters in length. It originates from subtropical and tropical regions (especially in India and the Himalayas). The roots are used as supplements as they are rich in steroidal saponoids, alkaloids, and isoflavone. They are used for men’s health, as they act on the overall condition of the prostate and improve reproductive functions. In addition, this plant has a positive effect on health and mental functions (e.g. stress reduction).
SAO PALMETTO
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) belongs to the family Palmaceae. It is widely used for its benefits on human health, especially on reproductive functions. It is believed to act anti-inflammatory and increase the quality of life of men in case of prostate problems. It also plays a role in regulating the endocrine system (especially testosterone levels). Therefore, it is often used in the treatment of benign prostate hypertrophy.
MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is an essential trace element that is involved in over 300 metabolic reactions in the body.
Half of this mineral salt is found in bones and teeth. It is involved in energy production and is essential for the transmission of nerve impulses. It is therefore recognized as a tonic and is widely used to reduce fatigue.
VITAMIN B6
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin involved in numerous metabolic reactions such as enzyme co-factor. It is used here because it helps regulate hormonal activity, which naturally decreases with age. In addition, like all vitamins of its group, vitamin B6 is involved in energy metabolism and contributes in particular to reducing fatigue. It should be noted that the body is not able to synthesize this vitamin, nor store it; Therefore, dietary intake and supplements are important.
ZINC
Zinc is a trace element that plays an important role in our body, as it is essential for the proper action of hundreds of enzymes. It is necessary for sexual maturation and acts on the endocrine system (in particular, in the production and regulation of testosterone).
